What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the world’s most widely recognized English language proficiency tests. It assesses the language ability of non-native English speakers who wish to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries. Here’s everything you need to know about the IELTS exam:
- Types of IELTS:
- IELTS Academic: Designed for individuals applying for higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment.
- IELTS General Training: Suitable for candidates migrating to English-speaking countries or for employment and training purposes.
- Test Components:
- Listening: Assessing candidates’ ability to understand spoken English in various contexts.
- Reading: Evaluating comprehension skills through a range of texts, including academic and general interest articles.
- Writing: Analyzing candidates’ ability to express ideas effectively in written form, with tasks such as essay writing and letter/email composition.
- Speaking: Evaluating candidates’ spoken English skills through a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner.
- Test Format:
- IELTS Listening and Speaking tests are the same for both Academic and General Training versions.
- However, the Reading and Writing tests differ in content and difficulty level between the Academic and General Training versions.
- Scoring:
- Each component of the test is graded on a scale of 0 to 9, known as the IELTS Band Scale.
- Test takers receive a band score for each component, as well as an overall band score, which is the average of the four component scores.
- Test Duration:
- The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes for both Academic and General Training versions.

IELTS Academic Test Components:

- Description:Candidates listen to recordings of native English speakers and answer questions based on the information they hear. The recordings include conversations, monologues, and academic lectures.
- 2.Reading:
- Test Time Duration: 60 minutes.
- Question Types: Multiple choice, identifying information (True/False/Not Given), identifying writer's views/claims (Yes/No/Not Given), matching headings, matching information, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, diagram label completion.
- Description: Candidates read a variety of texts, including articles, journals, and extracts from books. They answer questions to test their comprehension skills and ability to identify specific information, main ideas, and opinions.
- 3. Writing:
- Test Time Duration: 60 minutes.
- Question Types: Task 1 - Describe a chart, graph, table, diagram, or map; Task 2 - Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.
- Description: In Task 1, candidates must summarize and interpret visual data, such as graphs or charts, in their own words. In Task 2, candidates must write an essay in response to a given prompt. This task assesses their ability to present and support an argument coherently and logically.
- 4. Speaking:
- Test Time Duration: 11–14 minutes
- Question Types: Part 1 - Introduction and interview; Part 2 - Long turn (candidate speaks for 1-2 minutes on a given topic); Part 3 - Discussion (candidate engages in a discussion related to the topic from Part 2).
- Description: Candidates engage in a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. The speaking test assesses their ability to communicate effectively in English and discuss a range of topics fluently and coherently.
IELTS General Training Test Components:
- 1. Listening:
- Test Time Duration: Approximately 30 minutes.
- Question Types: Similar to the Academic module.
- Description: The listening test format is the same as the Academic module, but the recordings and questions are based on everyday social situations.
- 2.Reading:
- Test Time Duration: 60 minutes.
- Question Types: Similar to the Academic module, but with some differences in content and difficulty level.
- Description: Candidates read passages related to everyday topics, such as advertisements, notices, and workplace documents. The test assesses their ability to understand and interpret information from various sources.
- 3. Writing:
- Question Types: Similar to the Academic module, but Task 1 requires letter writing instead of summarizing visual data.
- Description: In Task 1, candidates must write a letter in response to a given situation. In Task 2, candidates write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem, similar to the Academic module.
- 4. Speaking:
- Test Time Duration: 11–14 minutes.
- Question Types: Similar to the Academic module.
- Description: The speaking test format is the same as the Academic module, but the topics and questions are based on everyday situations and experiences.
Note: The “Q Card” or “Question Paper” is provided to candidates during the listening test. It contains instructions and questions for each section of the listening test. Candidates can make notes on the Q Card during the test, which they can use to answer the questions.
